General Information: Woodcut - Woodcuts are the simplest form of print. They are made by cutting an image into a block of wood. The artist cuts away the areas that he does not want to show in the finished image. The uncut areas or lines that go to make the image are left raised on the block. The block is then inked and the print made, usually under light pressure. Woodcuts were commonly used in the 19th century for the reproduction of illustrations in newspapers, books and magazines.
